Beyond the Land of Castles UP081

Davide Degano’s Beyond the Land of Castles pays tribute to local mountain communities threatened by globalisation in Friuli Venezia Giulia, a region of northern Italy that borders Slovenia.

The documentary series captures life in the “forgotten” villages around the Italian and Slovenian borders, as a depiction of emigration and depopulation, and an exploration of the photographer’s heritage.

Beyond the Land of Castles is an examination of the importance of “local” through memory, and how modern society neutralizes it in the name of globalization. It is a universal story. It is a story of power, who has it and decides how development should look like, and who do not have it, and never will.

Davide Degano is an Italian photographer currently based in The Netherlands.
